SPANISH 1 SYLLABUS

Course Description: This course is an introduction to the Spanish language. In it, we will focus on the initiation of communication skills in written and spoken Spanish. You will learn to communicate in real-life contexts about simple subjects of everyday life. In order to facilitate proper communication, you will be expected to learn the relevant grammatical structures and above all how to conjugate verbs. You will also keep on learning about the culture and history of Spanish speaking countries.

Objectives for the course:
1. Learn the Spanish alphabet.
2. Improve listening and speaking skills through class dialogues and activities.
3. Begin writing short texts.
4. Learn the basics of writing and reading in Spanish.
5. Acquire a diverse vocabulary that will help you to communicate into day life events.

TEXTBOOKS
¡Avancemos! 1 (Mc Dougal Littell, 2007) Textbook.
¡Avancemos! 1 Cuaderno (Mc Dougal Littell, 2007) Workbook.

DICTIONARY
Spanish-English Dictionary. It is essential to have a good Spanish-English dictionary and every student needs to have one. I will recommend you the following dictionary, which is the one that we will be using in class for all the Spanish groups.
Oxford Spanish Dictionary (Oxford University Press, 2005) ISBN 978-0-19-860733-5

NOTEBOOK
What are my expectations about your notebooks?
I expect you to work properly on your binders or notebooks. Even if I will not collect your notebooks for a grade I expect to see clean notes with different sections for grammar, vocabulary, etc. Everything that I write on the chalkboard should be in your notebooks as it can be used in exams.

GRADES
Your semester grade is comprised of the following:
Quarter 1 Grade 40%
Quarter 2 Grade 40%
Semester 1 Exam 20%

Your Quarter grade is comprised of the following:
Tests 25%
Writings 15%
Homework 15%
Quizzes 15%
Participation/orals 20%
Culture Project 10%

TESTS represent 25% of the final grade. We will take a test at the end of every Unit (Unidad), what it means every two chapters (Lecciones).
QUIZZES represent 20% of the final grade. We will take a quiz at the end of every chapter (Leccion).
WRITINGS, represent 15% of the final grade. Writings will be done at home or in class. At the beginning of the year we just expect students to write simple sentences, but they should be able to write simple essays for the end of the year. Students will be allowed to use their dictionaries to help them in most of these papers. Cheating by using computer translators will be punished by getting zeros.
HOMEWORK, represents 15% of the final grade. Homework has to be turned in on time. If it is one day late you will lose one letter grade on your assignment. With two days of delay I won’t collect them (unless you have a paper signed by parents explaining the delay reason).
CULTURE PROJECT, represents 10% of the final grade. These projects would be worked on in teams. We will work on one project for semester.
PARTICIPATION/ORALS represents 15% of the final grade. I expect students to participate in class by volunteering in correcting exercises on the chalkboard, reading, but above all trying to speak in Spanish as much as possible since the first day of class. They will have a participation grade almost every two weeks.

ORAL RUBRIC
This will be the rubric that I will follow to grade your oral level. As I understand that speaking a foreign language can be difficult, 15/20 (75%) will be the lowest grade that you might get in an oral exam. You will gave to add or subtract the points (positive/negative)that you got in the class because of participating.

20 PERFECTO
19 EXCELENTE
18 MUY BIEN
17 BIEN
16 SUFICIENTE
15 FLOJO

CLASS POLICIES:
1. Be in your seat and ready to begin class when the bell rings.
2. Bring your textbook, workbook and Spanish notebook/IPAD to class every day.
3. Turn in your homework on time.
4. Show respect for other students and the teacher.
5. Follow all other guidelines as set out in the student’s handbook.
